Random Acts of Kindness

Remember the movie "Pay it Forward?" If you haven't seen it... in the movie, a teacher gives his class an unusual assignment - think up a practical way to make the world a better place, and put it into action. Eleven year old Trevor comes up with the notion of "Pay It Forward" - do a needed favour for three different people without being asked, and then ask them to do the same for three others.

So simple. Three simple acts. Could it really change the world?

I read a blog post about a woman on her 38th birthday who celebrated by doing 38 random acts of kindness. She had some great ideas - such as taping change to the outside of a vending machine with a sign  to take it if needed. Or buying a grocery gift card, and then turning around and handing it to  the person in line behind her. Pumping people's gas so they didn't have to get out of their car in the cold. And so on. (it's a great read full of ideas!)

So, did her 38 acts of kindness change the world?

I don't know.

But I know that they encouraged many that were the fortunate ones to be on the receiving end of the acts. I know that it has inspired countless others to pay it forward. I know that I'm wondering what random act of kindness I can do today because of it.

Have you been on the receiving or giving end of a Random act of Kindness? Share your ideas - and inspire someone else. Pay it forward... and maybe, just maybe, we will change the world. One small act at a time.

We had a “Pay it Forward” board in my studio where we sent people items to brighten their day. Pay it Forward in the handmade community is always a treat too. I should include a Pay it Forward notice in their parcel the next time…that way we can make the world a happier place, just one at a time. Thanks for the reminder, Krista.
